Overview

Moni Prodromou (St. John the Baptist) is dramatically embedded in the vertical limestone of the Lousios Gorge. Wooden galleries, rock-cut cells and a compact katholikon form an extraordinary ensemble that still houses a small brotherhood.

History

With medieval roots and substantial rebuilding in later centuries, the monastery long served as a refuge and spiritual center for Gortynia. Oral histories link it to periods of learning and support for local communities in challenging times.

Art & Architecture

Expect restrained post-Byzantine aesthetics: stone masonry, timber balconies, intimate chapels and fresco remnants. The cliff setting and wooden verandas over the void are the site’s signature features.
