Education and gunpowder fueled Dimitsana’s decisive role in Greece’s fight for freedom.

Dimitsana’s famed schools and gunpowder industry were pivotal in the 1821 Revolution. Benefiting from Ottoman-granted privileges since 1744, locals developed powder-making expertise, culminating in 14 water-powered mills producing 500 kg daily for the rebels. The Spiliotopoulos brothers led production, while villagers even sacrificed library books to make cartridges, earning Dimitsana lasting historic honor.
